Business Preparedness for 2022

Now that we’re into October, most businesses are in the middle of strategic planning for 2022.

Evaluating company and employee performance.

Checking the actual numbers versus projections.

Allocating resources.

Prioritizing next year’s objectives.

But as we look ahead to the winter season, make sure that your IT goals and emergency preparedness are both a consideration in your company’s planning.

IT strategy aligning with business goals

While the next year will undoubtedly bring its own set of challenges, one thing that shouldn’t be a surprise is how your IT plans align with business goals.

Where are the areas that your competition is ahead of you?

Can you catch up with help from your IT group? Considerations must be made for IT spend and how its long-term payoffs ultimately marry with business objectives.

Clear direction helps everyone involved to see the big picture. Those small steps toward the end goal seem incremental, but are crucial to success.

Technology plays an important role in being effective and lean within the business.

Every aspect of a proper IT strategy should support the goals of your business.

As you look to next year, FIBERTOWN can help. If you’d like to see how we can help you hit your IT goals with a strategy session, give us a call.

Reflecting back on last winter

If your base of operations is in Texas, you are well aware of Winter Storm Uri from February of 2021.

The storm and resulting freeze and local disasters were devastating. Uri was unique because it blanketed the entire state of Texas for several days.

And as we all know, Texas is not prepared for that level of winter weather.

Some estimates put the damage at up to $200 billion. That includes property damage, disrupted oil and gas production, stopped food processing facilities and manufacturing plants as well as agricultural losses.

During Uri, FIBERTOWN was able to maintain its 100% uptime service-level agreement for all customers. No services were lost or affected. In fact, not only did we keep everyone up and running, we added a new client who couldn’t afford to be down during the freeze.

The supply chain has been so disrupted, we are still feeling the effects even today.

Planning for a business disruption and implementing disaster recovery procedures is critical for any company, especially for organizations along the Gulf Coast.

While Uri power outages were extensive, Texas is normally hit with some severe weather during the winter months that the state is not equipped for (be it 1-2 days or a full week like we had with Uri).

Without any remediation to the power grid, it leaves us just as vulnerable if not more so than we were last winter.

Be prepared for the unexpected

Now we’re looking ahead to 2022, and getting ready for a new year.

As a result of last winter’s storms, has your company changed how you look at emergency plans?

Instead of deciding that Uri was a fluke and that it won’t happen again, responsible businesses will look to learn from the storm.

What action items have you added to your plans for 2022?

Disaster recovery should figure prominently into your list.

At FIBERTOWN, we help companies address two key factors: maintaining the availability of critical technical systems at our colocation facilities, and work area recovery office space.

Our office spaces are adjacent to each data center location with backup power, blended internet solutions and connection to the customer colocation space available to ensure our customers always stay connected.

We always want to help our clients be ahead of any severe weather or natural disaster, no matter what comes our way.

FIBERTOWN has 100% uptime during Texas deep freeze event

Fully redundant power allows Houston and Bryan data centers to remain 100% operational during February 2021 winter storm

During any disaster, companies must be prepared with operational redundancy. The amount of backup power available is paramount to keeping systems online during the crisis.

When a utility failure occurs due to severe weather (like the sustained freezing weather of February 2021), equipment failure and power line damage can be devastating.

Data centers (like FIBERTOWN) who offer redundant power and fault-tolerant systems will be better equipped to avoid costly periods of downtime.

Cloud and blended internet keeps FIBERTOWN online

With Megaport connectivity, FIBERTOWN customers are closer to the cloud resources that are essential to business. Megaport provides protected, private access to cloud connectivity services such as Office 365, AWS and Google through a single port.

This optimizes cost and safety and reduces latency delays.

Megaport is a large-scale Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) utilizing 100 Gbps technology to deliver dedicated access to cloud services.

Using a dedicated, secure connection to the cloud, Megaport brings the cloud to the colocation so that your cloud services and colocation services can operate as one.

FIBERTOWN also uses a blended internet system with multiple carriers to keep customers online at all times. Blended internet is more cost-effective, flexible, and reliable than traditional or dedicated internet services.

Thoughtful infrastructure secures FIBERTOWN’s redundancy

The Houston data center is located along the main fiber route from Dallas to Houston, which provides close proximity and easy access to the fastest telecommunications networks.

FIBERTOWN HOUSTON also features diverse fiber entrance points in and around the building, designed to support a fully redundant and secure multi-homed network.

The Houston data center utilizes primary and secondary Point of Presence (PoP) rooms, delivering diverse pipelines of redundant connectivity to customer equipment.

This ensures every customer is always protected and business connectivity never goes down.

FIBERTOWN also provides point-to-point services via a dedicated pathway between its Houston data center and the Bryan/College Station data center.

Both facilities are concurrently maintainable and offer 100% uptime.

Another important factor is FIBERTOWN’s dedication to power with its HVAC cooling systems. The environment inside the data center can never change, so redundancy and concurrent maintainability must be in place for the critical systems delivering cooling.

If a component of the system goes down, the infrastructure ensures functionality even in the event of a component failure.

Utilizing FIBERTOWN data centers for critical business systems

FIBERTOWN offers fully redundant, secure and reliable data centers to keep your mission-critical business systems available 100% of the time.

As a colocation provider, the range of disaster recovery solutions is nearly unlimited. You can use FIBERTOWN as your primary & secondary sites, only secondary sites, hot or tape back-up, and for Highly Available (HA) fail-over.

FIBERTOWN office suites offer a resilient solution

FIBERTOWN office spaces provide redundancy and reliability similar to our data center solutions. FIBERTOWN customer offices survived the winter storm events in February 2021 without interruption of power and retained full connectivity. The office space HVAC systems are available 24/7/365 and remain reliably in service throughout the disastrous events of February 2021.

We can help you configure your systems and office space in the way that is most efficient and appropriate for your disaster recovery needs.

Texas Data Centers Help Emergency Services During Winter Storms

Storm readiness prepares FIBERTOWN data centers to host local emergency services operations

Throughout Winter Storm Uri in Texas and the resulting local disasters, FIBERTOWN data centers in Bryan, TX and Houston have remained up and running.

Our storm readiness planning allowed our teams to be prepared with utility power sourcing, emergency generator fuel deliveries, facility hardening, food and water supplies and increased staff scheduling and coordination.

We did not experience any services failures or faltering and none of our customers were negatively affected.

Extra support staff remained on-site to ensure data center customers were well taken care of. Our team enjoyed serving as the physical eyes and ears when travel wasn’t possible for clients.

All services, from colocation to disaster recovery office space remained online and available.

Local emergency services set up operations at FIBERTOWN

The Brazos Combined Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) — which includes emergency management teams for Texas A&M University, Brazos County and the Cities of Bryan and College Station — deployed at their resilient office spaces in the FIBERTOWN Bryan Data Center facility.

When the primary College Station 911 location was impacted by a power outage, the BCECD 911 team also relocated its staff to operations at the FIBERTOWN Bryan Data Center facility.

During the freezing weather, CEOC teams coordinated emergency operations to rescue at-risk residents stranded at their homes with no power.

The CEOC staff also worked incredibly hard to reschedule COVID-19 vaccinations, arranged area warming stations, and coordinated shelters for the area.

We continue to work closely with local emergency management services staff to offer our support for future storm preparedness planning.

Clients utilize disaster recovery space after severe weather power outages

At FIBERTOWN, we help companies address two key factors: maintaining the availability of critical technical systems at our colocation facilities, and work area recovery office space.

During Winter Storm Uri, we moved quickly to help customers relocate.

After suffering from 48 hours of downtime at their on-premises location, one new colocation customer moved into the FIBERTOWN Bryan data center just 4 hours after inquiring about disaster recovery office space. We pride ourselves in being responsive and keeping the customer’s success as our primary objective. At FIBERTOWN, we believe the success of our customers leads to and is the best measure of our success.

During Winter Storm Uri, we also provided temporary disaster recovery office space for a customer whose employees did not have internet connectivity from home or at their office location. They were able to continue operations and keep their billing current thanks to the office space prepared for them at the FIBERTOWN Houston campus.

We helped a new business continuity customer in the middle of the impact of the Winter Storm Uri, and one of our vendors assisted another FIBERTOWN customer to keep their on-premises data center operational when they were impacted by power outages.

Datacenter uptime you can count on

Our office spaces are adjacent to each data center location with backup power, blended internet solutions and connection to the customer colocation space available to ensure our customers always stay connected.

We always want to help our clients be ahead of any severe weather or natural disaster, no matter what comes our way.
